DESCRIPTION:The full Federal Council welcomes Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron on the Bundesplatz\, with military honours. Alain Berset gives the welcome speech in the Hall of the Federal Palace. He starts from Jean-Luc Godard\, “Solitude is not isolation”\, traces Switzerland’s political debt to France\, from 1798 to 1848\, and concludes: “Our world is bleeding.” \nThe talks cover bilateral relations\, the bilateral path with the European Union\, the Security Council and International Geneva. Two texts are signed: a joint declaration on research into the cryosphere and the Alps\, and a declaration of intent on student mobility. At the press conference: “Switzerland is profoundly European\, by its geographical position\, but also by its values and its culture.” \nOn 16 November\, the two presidents visit the Jean Monnet Foundation in Lausanne and debate Europe with students of the University of Lausanne. SUMMARY:3rd Life Sciences Cluster Forum of the Basel Chamber of Commerce
DESCRIPTION:At the 3rd Life Sciences Cluster Forum of the Handelskammer beider Basel\, “Zusammenarbeit als Schlüssel für ein nachhaltiges digitales Gesundheitswesen”\, in the Gehry auditorium on the Novartis campus\, Alain Berset speaks after the welcome by the Chamber’s President\, National Councillor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter\, and a presentation by Ann Aerts of the Novartis Foundation. He talks about the Basel pharmaceutical hub and digital health. A cluster\, he says\, is a very Swiss paradox: competitors who grow stronger by strengthening the others. He compares it to the Federal Council. \nThe health system does not suffer from a lack of digital technology but from a lack of coordination; he cites nine different codes for the female sex. Hence the DigiSanté programme and the health data space\, to which the pharmaceutical industry must contribute. He concludes on the longevity of the Basel location\, at the world’s top for 150 years: its success factors are “weder analog noch digital. Sondern real”. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nChambre de commerce des deux Bâle (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nHandelskammer beider Basel\, programme of the 3rd Life Sciences Cluster Forum

But’”. \nOn 2 November in Ottawa\, he is received by Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall\, then by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Parliament Hill: bilateral relations\, La Francophonie\, international affairs\, the UN Security Council. The Minister of Canadian Heritage\, Pascale St-Onge\, then hosts a lunch for him. \nOn 3 November\, at the Cinémathèque québécoise\, he holds talks with Mélanie Joly\, Minister of Foreign Affairs\, and Pascale St-Onge\, then signs the new audiovisual co-production agreement with them. It replaces the 1987 agreement\, facilitates financing and distribution and opens up to series. SUMMARY:Lecture at the Oxford Union and visit to London
DESCRIPTION:At the Oxford Union\, Alain Berset gives a lecture entitled “The role of Switzerland in a fractured world”\, followed by a dialogue and questions from some hundred students. He then meets Swiss students and teachers at the university. \nIn an interview given the same day to swissinfo.ch\, he looks back on the year: the pandemic\, the Credit Suisse crisis\, the war in Ukraine\, the Middle East after the Hamas attacks. “Switzerland is a land without a hidden agenda”\, hence its role as a platform for dialogue and mediation. On neutrality\, he recalls that Russia’s aggression trampled on every international rule\, which justifies adopting the European sanctions. “Fundamentally\, I am an optimistic person\, but I am not naïve.” \nFriday 27 October 2023 — Oxford\n\nLecture and debate at the Oxford Union: “The role of Switzerland in a fractured world”\nMeeting with Swiss students and teachers at the University of Oxford\nInterview with swissinfo.ch\n\nSaturday 28 October 2023 — London\n\nVisit to the Royal Academy of Arts with its Director\, Axel Rüger (Marina Abramović retrospective)\n\nSources \n\nswissinfo.ch\, 09.11.2023

He had invited her. The day before\, in Chișinău\, Ignazio Cassis announced a new package of Swiss aid to the Moldova Support Platform. \nThe talks cover the consequences for Moldova of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and bilateral cooperation: drinking water in rural areas\, maternity units\, vocational training\, the fight against corruption. Maia Sandu calls Switzerland a “prieten de încredere”\, a trusted friend. The EFTA–Moldova free trade agreement\, signed the previous summer\, awaits ratification by the Swiss Parliament. \nThe following day\, the President visits a pharmaceutical company in Basel\, debates with ETH Zurich students and meets the Moldovan diaspora. \nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 18.10.2023\nPresidency of the Republic of Moldova\, 18.10.2023

SUMMARY:Reception for the winners of Swiss Youth in Science
DESCRIPTION:At the National Library in Berne\, Alain Berset receives 24 winners of the 2023 national competition of the Swiss Youth in Science Foundation (Schweizer Jugend forscht). After the presentation of two award-winning projects\, he answers their questions: “Wir müssen alles dafür tun\, dass junge Forscherinnen und Forscher hier in der Schweiz beste Bedingungen vorfinden.” He praises the range of award-winning topics\, from separating plastics to land reform in Namibia\, by way of ethanol made from old clothes. \nA project on feathers serves as his starting point: on the Federal Council\, he says\, one constantly wears feathers that are not one’s own; “Wir in Bern nennen es Kollegialitätsprinzip.” In French\, he mentions CERN’s Science Gateway\, inaugurated ten days earlier\, and Switzerland’s limited access to Horizon Europe: “In the long term\, this will pose a problem for research and innovation in Switzerland.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\nRéception des lauréats de Science et jeunesse (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nSchweizer Jugend forscht\, 17.10.2023

Ministers and senior representatives of the member and associate member states attend the day. \nAlain Berset speaks for Switzerland\, the host state. He quotes Jean d’Ormesson on art and science\, pays tribute to the architect and calls CERN “a School of Higher Particles”. On the 27-kilometre ring\, partly under French soil: “this invisible circle makes CERN an intersection between Switzerland\, France and Europe”. And: “an exceptional institution\, which allows Switzerland and Geneva to shine in the world”. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nCERN – Inauguration du Portail de la Science (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nCERN\, press release of 07.10.2023\nFederal Council\, speech published on 09.10.2023

SUMMARY:Swiss Performing Arts Awards 2023
DESCRIPTION:At LAC Lugano\, as part of FIT – Festival Internazionale del Teatro\, the Federal Office of Culture presents the Swiss Performing Arts Awards. The Grand Award / Hans Reinhart Ring goes to the choreographer Cindy Van Acker. Among the other winners: Circus Monti\, the Tellspiele Altdorf\, Bruno Cathomas\, Tiziana Conte; the dance award to Ruth Childs for “Blast!”\, the theatre award to Theater Neumarkt. \nAlain Berset announces that this is his last cultural awards ceremony. Since 2012\, he says\, he has only ever been able to say “bravo”; so he finally gives his own “acceptance speech”\, addressed to Hans Reinhart. He starts from a sentence by Hermann Hesse on the spiral path and defends cultural spending: “every public franc given to an artist represents a sustainable investment plan for society”. \nHe closes by awarding three rings of his own: to the Federal Office of Culture\, to the performing arts that came through the health crisis\, and to the evening’s audience. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nPrix suisses des arts de la scène 2023 (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 31.08.2023\nlaRegione\, 31.08.2023

SUMMARY:Opening of the Building Bridges summit on sustainable finance
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset opens the Building Bridges summit at the CICG in Geneva\, after an introduction by Patrick Odier\, who chairs the foundation. Two weeks earlier\, he was at the summit on the Sustainable Development Goals in New York. His finding: only a fraction of the 2015 commitments will be met. “It is a question of political will.” \nA speech in French\, then in English. For more than 80% of the 2030 Agenda targets\, progress is limited\, stalled or reversed; private capital must be steered towards these goals\, above all in the least developed countries. He cites the Swiss Climate Scores\, the climate law accepted in June\, the new strategy of the Private Infrastructure Development Group. For the first time\, the conference hosts the UNFCCC Sharm el-Sheikh dialogue on financial flows. He then stays on for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala\, Director-General of the WTO\, and Sergio Ermotti\, CEO of UBS. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nOuverture du sommet Building Bridges (in English\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nBuilding Bridges\, speaker page (kick-off of 02.10.2023)

SUMMARY:Opening of the 19th Zurich Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset walks the green carpet and speaks at the opening night of the 19th Zurich Film Festival. Opening film: “Dream Scenario”\, with Nicolas Cage. The festival shows 148 films\, including 52 world or European premieres\, a record. \n“2023 ist ein seltsames Film-Jahr.” Harrison Ford is 30 again\, Tom Cruise 25; he himself\, the longest-serving member of the Federal Council\, will leave it “als Jüngster”. He supports the Hollywood strike: AI requires rules that protect intellectual property and pay. He sees “Barbenheimer” as proof that cinema remains a place of shared experience. He welcomes the ZFF’s takeover of the former Kosmos cinema\, under the name “Frame”. And ends: the best answer to the crisis of cinema? “Gute Filme.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\nOuverture du 19e Zurich Film Festival (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nblue News\, 28.09.2023

SUMMARY:Working visit by the Prime Minister of Kosovo\, Albin Kurti
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset receives Albin Kurti at the Federal Palace for a courtesy visit. Kurti is accompanied by his Minister of Culture\, Hajrulla Çeku. The talks cover northern Kosovo and the normalisation with Serbia initiated by the EU. \nBerset calls for the implementation of the Brussels and Ohrid agreements\, including the Kosovan government’s commitment to grant adequate autonomy to Serb-majority municipalities. Switzerland supports Kosovo’s application to the Council of Europe. It is the second-largest foreign investor in Kosovo; some 180\,000 people of Kosovan origin live in Switzerland; Swisscoy is extended until 2026. \nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 22.09.2023\nOffice of the Prime Minister of Kosovo\, 22.09.2023

SUMMARY:40 years of Fri-Son
DESCRIPTION:The Fribourg concert venue Fri-Son celebrates its 40th anniversary. Alain Berset speaks there\, on the evening of his meeting with Albin Kurti in Berne. \nHis speech is a mock palaeontology lesson: “1983: discovery\, in Switzerland\, in Fribourg\, of Homo Fri-Sonus”. He recalls the origins: the 1981 Fri-Art exhibition\, born in opposition to the conventional celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Fribourg’s entry into the Confederation\, and punk. And Kurt Cobain’s visit\, on 25 November 1989. For him\, the hyphen in “Fri-Son” is a bridge between French and German speakers. He thanks the first generation\, “praktisch mittellos”\, and hopes for more support for the next ones. \nSpeeches on this site \n\n40 ans de Fri-Son (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, speech of 22.09.2023

SUMMARY:High-level week of the 78th UN General Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset leads the Swiss delegation to the opening of the 78th General Assembly. On 18 September\, he takes part in the summit on the Sustainable Development Goals\, which is held only every four years: only 12% of the 169 targets are on track. He is the first speaker at a round table on science\, technology and data. \nOn the 19th\, he addresses the General Assembly: extreme inequality\, unseen since the early 20th century\, the climate crisis\, wars\, the erosion of multilateralism. “The UN embodies the institutionalised hope for a better world.” On the 20th\, he speaks at the Security Council\, chaired by Albania\, in the debate on Ukraine: Russia\, a permanent member\, denies its responsibility for the thousands of dead and wounded; Switzerland calls on it to withdraw immediately from Ukrainian territory. \nOn the sidelines\, he sees a dozen heads of state and government\, including Maia Sandu\, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Yoon Suk-yeol. With António Guterres\, he discusses the Black Sea Grain Initiative\, Ukraine and peace in Colombia. \nMonday 18 September 2023 — New York\n\nOpening of the summit on the Sustainable Development Goals\nMeeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune\nMeeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva\nMeeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres\nMeeting with Moussa Faki Mahamat\, Chairperson of the African Union Commission\nMeeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu\nSDG summit round table: science\, technology\, innovation and data\, speech\nExchanges with the presidents of Botswana\, the Central African Republic and Albania\, and with the Executive Secretary of SADC\nReception for the 50th anniversary of Germany’s accession to the UN\n\nTuesday 19 September 2023 — New York\n\nOpening of the general debate\nSwitzerland’s speech to the General Assembly\nMeeting with Kenyan President William Ruto\nReception hosted by President Joe Biden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\n\nWednesday 20 September 2023 — New York\n\nMeeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol\nMeeting with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit\nSecurity Council open debate on Ukraine\, speech\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 20.09.2023

SUMMARY:Opening of the exhibition “Sprachenland Schweiz” at the National Museum
DESCRIPTION:At the Swiss National Museum in Zurich\, Alain Berset opens the exhibition “Sprachenland Schweiz” (Switzerland\, a land of languages)\, on show from 15 September 2023 to 14 January 2024. Visitors follow the route with headphones\, in five languages\, from the Röstigraben to the Jura question. At the opening\, the Bernese poet Ariane von Graffenried reads texts in dialect. \nA speech in German\, with passages in French and Italian. He starts from Camus\, “My homeland is the French language”\, and his schoolteacher\, M. Germain. He quotes Mark Twain: 30 hours for English\, 30 days for French\, 30 years for German. Then the substance: “for Switzerland to work\, the machine – our institutions – needs the software – our languages”. Without them\, the institutions do not work. He recalls the 2016 Thurgau dispute over French in primary school: federalism does not mean that each canton does as it pleases. More than 20% of the population speaks a language other than the national languages. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nVernissage de l’exposition « Sprachenland Schweiz » au Musée national suisse (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nSwiss National Museum\, magazine 5/2023 (exhibition dates)\nSwiss National Museum\, media\, 14.09.2023\nNZZ\, 12.10.2023

SUMMARY:175 years of the Federal Constitution
DESCRIPTION:At the Parliament Building\, a ceremony for the 175th anniversary of the Federal Constitution of 1848. Alain Berset speaks of a “masterstroke”: a risky\, bold act\, written in 51 days\, while the great powers were crushing their revolutions. \nHe highlights Ulrich Ochsenbein\, who chaired the drafting committee: he understood that the defeated of the Sonderbund had to be involved\, championed bicameralism from 1845 and held his troops back before Lucerne. An imperfect masterstroke\, he adds: women and Jews were excluded. He sets the optimism of 1848 against today’s pessimism. “Compromise […] is not the path of least resistance\, but the only possible way to build a common future.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\n175 ans de la Constitution fédérale (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, speech of 12.09.2023

SUMMARY:Meeting of German-speaking heads of state at Laeken Castle
DESCRIPTION:At the invitation of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde\, Alain Berset represents Switzerland at the annual meeting of the heads of state of the six German-speaking countries\, at Laeken Castle. Around the table: Frank-Walter Steinmeier\, Alexander Van der Bellen\, Grand Duke Henri\, Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein. The format has existed since 2004; Switzerland hosted it in 2018. \nThe theme chosen by Belgium: space\, in the presence of ESA astronauts. For Berset\, space is a matter of Europe’s strategic autonomy; Switzerland\, a founding member of ESA\, will continue to contribute. In April\, the Federal Council adopted its “Space Policy 2023”. \nBefore the meeting\, he is received by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. Belgium will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2024; they discuss the Switzerland–EU exploratory talks\, hydrogen\, frozen Russian assets\, on which Berset argues for an internationally coordinated approach\, and the register of damage created in Reykjavik. \nMonday 11 September 2023 — Brussels and Laeken\n\nMeeting with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo\nWelcome by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde at Laeken Castle\nRound table of the heads of state on current European space affairs\, with ESA astronauts\nConcert by the Young Belgian Strings\, dinner of the heads of state\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 11.09.2023

SUMMARY:Swiss Music Awards 2023: laudatio for Erik Truffaz
DESCRIPTION:The Federal Office of Culture’s Swiss Music Awards are presented for the first time in the Grosse Halle of the Reitschule in Berne. The Grand Award goes to the trumpeter Erik Truffaz. Among the winners: Sonja Moonear\, Mario Batkovic\, Lucia Cadotsch\, Saadet Türköz; special awards to Helvetiarockt\, Kunstraum Walcheturm and the rapper Pronto. \nAlain Berset gives the laudatio. He offers a “grammatical analysis” of the work: the subject\, the verb “to jazz”\, the complements\, from Sophie Hunger to Oxmo Puccino. He quotes Miles Davis: “True music is silence. And all the notes only frame that silence.” At the end of the evening\, he sits down at the grand piano for a duet with Truffaz. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nLaudatio Erik Truffaz (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, speech of 08.09.2023\nSwiss Music Review (Schweizer Musikzeitung)\nRadio Lac (ATS)\, 11.05.2023

SUMMARY:economiesuisse Business Day
DESCRIPTION:At the Kongresshaus in Zurich\, before some 350 guests\, Alain Berset delivers the Federal Council’s message at the Business Day. The theme\, six weeks before the federal elections: “Wahlen 2023: Perspektiven statt Wunschdenken”. Christoph Mäder\, President of economiesuisse\, calls there for progress on the Bilaterals III. \nBerset talks about artificial intelligence. He opens with a jibe: if AI threatens 27% of jobs\, according to the OECD\, that makes two seats on the Federal Council. “5 Menschen und 2 Algorithmen?” Then the substance: productivity will rise\, and so will inequality\, in a world already as unequal as a hundred years ago. He asks questions without taboos: taxing AI companies more\, reforming education\, a welfare state that gets people back to work. He ends with Piaget: intelligence is what you use when you don’t know what to do. The answer to AI: “Mit mehr menschlicher Intelligenz.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\nJournée de l’économie d’economiesuisse (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nPlattform J\, 08.09.2023\neconomiesuisse\, “Wahlen 2023: Perspektiven statt Wunschdenken”

SUMMARY:Visit by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe\, Marija Pejčinović Burić
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset receives Marija Pejčinović Burić\, Secretary General of the Council of Europe\, in Berne; she has also come for the 60th anniversary of Switzerland’s accession. They discuss the follow-up to Reykjavik\, where in May the 4th Summit adopted principles for democracy and created the register of damage caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Switzerland has been a member of it since 30 August. \nHe argues for closer links between the Council of Europe\, the OSCE\, the European Political Community and the UN organisations in Geneva. He supports the accession of Kosovo\, which would open the European Court of Human Rights to all its inhabitants\, the Serb minority included. He deplores that the Court and its mechanism are “being put under pressure”. \nHe hands her Switzerland’s instrument of ratification of the Protocol amending Convention 108 on data protection (“108+”). The Secretary General then travels to Neuchâtel\, for a public lecture at the university. \nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 07.09.2023\nCouncil of Europe\, 07.09.2023

SUMMARY:75 years of Zurich Airport
DESCRIPTION:Zurich Airport celebrates its 75th anniversary with a three-day festival\, from 1 to 3 September. On the Friday evening\, Alain Berset and Zurich Government Councillor Carmen Walker Späh speak at the opening ceremony. \nHe opens with irony: he is not standing again for the Federal Council\, but “Das ist also keine Bewerbung für eine Stelle als Pilot”. Then a mock report from a federal working group: Kloten\, 31.5 million passengers in 2019; Bern-Belp\, 50\,174. Conclusion: “Der Flughafen Zürich ist schlicht zu gross.” \nMore seriously: a hub of European traffic\, an infrastructure on which trade and tourism depend\, thousands of employees. He recalls that aviation falls outside the Paris Agreement and calls for interim targets on the way to net zero in 2050. He mentions the 1948 runway\, one of the most modern in the world\, next to a village of huts. And ends: “Weniger Swiss finish. Und dafür mehr Swiss beginning.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\n75 ans de l’aéroport de Zurich (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFlughafen Zürich\, closing press release of the 75th anniversary festival

SUMMARY:Opening of the Numerik Games 2023
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset opens the 8th Numerik Games\, the digital cultures festival of Yverdon-les-Bains\, which grew out of the Maison d’Ailleurs. The festival\, held from 25 to 27 August in the town centre\, features a Lego exhibition this year. The speech is given at the official opening evening on Thursday 24 August\, the day before the festival opens to the public. \nA speech in the form of a game. He starts from Ole Kirk Christiansen\, the inventor of Lego\, a “carpenter” from Billund\, and his motto: “Only the best is good enough.” Switzerland\, he says\, was built like Lego\, brick by brick\, with ever more elaborate instructions\, in 1848 and then in 1874. He invokes Einstein\, a federal civil servant: “Play is the highest form of research.” And concludes with an equation: Yverdon (Y) hosts Events (M\, for “Manifestations”) where Culture (C) multiplies. “Y=MC².” \nSpeeches on this site \n\nOuverture des Numerik Games 2023 (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nHEAD – Genève\, announcement of the Numerik Games 2023 festival (dates and venue)\nMunicipality of Yverdon-les-Bains\, news of 21.08.2023\nRTN\, 16.08.2023

SUMMARY:Last Locarno Film Festival: opening and farewell at Monte Verità
DESCRIPTION:On 2 August\, Alain Berset opens the Locarno Film Festival\, the 76th\, for the last time. It is also the last edition for Marco Solari\, President since 2000. In the cloister of La Magistrale\, he pretends to give a closing speech rather than an opening one. He praises Giona A. Nazzaro’s selection\, a “2023 vintage” from every continent\, and a Swiss cinema that has regained its colour\, soon to be supported by the “lex Netflix”. He jokes about his joint retirement with Solari: he will have “2 of the 8\,000 chairs on the Piazza Grande” taken to the Cinémathèque suisse in Penthaz\, “to watch films there together in peace”. “Arrivederci Locarno\, arrivederci Ticino e viva il cinema!” \nAt Monte Verità\, at the traditional lunch hosted by the festival\, he says his farewells. He recounts having entered his name and Solari’s on the LoveCalculator website: 28%. Then comes a quiz on Swiss cinema from 2012 to 2023\, from “Ma vie de Courgette” to “Mad Heidi”. He ends in Italian: “Due parole che dicono tutto: bravo e grazie.” \nOn 3 August\, he meets the press at the PalaCinema with Carine Bachmann\, Director of the Federal Office of Culture\, and Ivo Kummer\, Head of the Film Section. \nWednesday 2 August 2023 — Locarno\n\nOpening ceremony of the festival at La Magistrale\, speeches by Alain Scherrer\, Marina Carobbio Guscetti\, Alain Berset\, Marco Solari and Giona A. SUMMARY:National Day in Aegerten\, Domdidier and Lausanne
DESCRIPTION:For his last 1 August in government\, Alain Berset gives three speeches. On the evening of 31 July\, he opens the festivities in Aegerten\, near Biel\, at the invitation of the 9er-Club\, in German and with a few words of Bärndütsch. On 1 August\, he speaks in Domdidier\, in his canton of Fribourg\, then in Lausanne. The common thread: the 175th anniversary of the Federal Constitution\, written by courageous men after a civil war and a Kulturkampf. \nHe lists what he will not miss: the press conference on premiums\, the 7 a.m. meetings with the parties during the sessions\, the phone handed back after four hours of Federal Council with too many messages. The 1 August speeches are not among them: he runs through the places where he has already given them\, from Middes to the Vully. \nIn Ouchy\, on the Place de la Navigation\, as the rain has just stopped\, he speaks before a few thousand people\, after the Mayor\, Grégoire Junod. “Above all\, let us not turn in on ourselves.” He argues for a Switzerland that is “optimistic\, confident\, courageous and committed” and ends with Simenon: “Memorable events never resemble what one expected of them.” \nMonday 31 July 2023 — Aegerten (BE)\n\nSpeech at the municipality’s National Day celebration\n\nTuesday 1 August 2023 — Domdidier (FR) and Lausanne\n\nSpeech at the Domdidier National Day celebration\nSpeech at the City of Lausanne’s National Day celebration\, in Ouchy\n\nSpeeches on this site \n\nFête nationale 2023 à Aegerten (in German\, French-language page)\nFête nationale 2023 à Domdidier (in French\, French-language page)\nFête nationale 2023 à Lausanne (in French\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nLe Temps / ATS\, 31.07–01.08.2023\nRadio Lac / ATS\, 01.08.2023\nPlattform J / Keystone-ATS\, 31.07.2023
