SUMMARY:Solothurn Literature Days: language in politics
DESCRIPTION:At the Solothurn Literature Days\, Alain Berset speaks about the use of language in politics. He opens with a “confession” (his visit to the Pope has left its mark) and with the constraint of speaking on behalf of the collegial body: to the question “Wer bin ich – und wenn ja\, wie viele?”\, a Federal Councillor can answer: seven. \nHis remarks are aimed not only at elected officials\, but at everyone who speaks in public debate: initiative committees\, organisations\, writers of letters to the editor\, artists. “Kultur ist immer politisch.” \nSpeeches on this site \n\nJournées littéraires de Soleure : la langue en politique (in German\, French-language page)

SUMMARY:Innovation and SME Day
DESCRIPTION:At EPFL’s SwissTech Convention Center\, the Innovation and SME Day is devoted to health and the “Health Valley”. Alain Berset opens holding… sheets of recycled paper\, whose manufacture he describes in detail: innovation is also “the struggle between the new and the old”. \nHe stresses the role of the public authorities\, which create the framework conditions\, alongside companies that know how to exploit their potential. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nJournée de l’innovation et des PME (French-language page)

SUMMARY:56th Art Biennale: Swiss Pavilion and Salon Suisse
DESCRIPTION:On 8 May\, Alain Berset inaugurates the Swiss Pavilion\, where Pamela Rosenkranz is showing “Our Product”. He defends a promotion of culture that opens spaces to thought-provoking works whose primary purpose is not to respond to the market. The exhibition speaks of the loss of physical autonomy\, of the boundary between illness and health\, of nature and artifice. \nHe visits the pavilion with the Austrian Minister of Culture\, Josef Ostermayer; they discuss the promotion of culture and international exchanges. \nOn the 9th\, at the Palazzo Trevisan\, he opens Pro Helvetia’s Salon Suisse\, “S.O.S. Dada – The World Is a Mess”. Speech in German\, every sentence launched with “DA”: “Dada is never right”\, proclaimed a Paris leaflet of 1921; for a politician\, that is convenient. \nFriday 8 May 2015 — Venice\n\nVisit to the Swiss Pavilion with the curator\, Susanne Pfeffer\, and the artist\, Pamela Rosenkranz\nMeeting with Josef Ostermayer\, Austrian Minister of Arts and Culture\nInauguration of the Swiss Pavilion: speeches by Charles Beer\, President of Pro Helvetia\, and Alain Berset\n\nSaturday 9 May 2015 — Venice\n\nOpening of the Salon Suisse “S.O.S. SUMMARY:Guest at the Glarus Landsgemeinde
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset is guest of honour at the Glarus Landsgemeinde; the official minutes list him among the guests. \nIn his speech\, he recalls that as early as 1463 the Landsgemeinde laid down the recipe for Schabziger: a designation of origin “avant la lettre”\, decided by direct democracy. The former President of the Swiss AOC-IGP Association says he is impressed. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nLandsgemeinde de Glaris (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nCanton of Glarus\, minutes of the Landsgemeinde of 03.05.2015

SUMMARY:Opening of the 29th International Book and Press Fair
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset opens the Geneva Book Fair at Palexpo (29 April – 3 May). He begins with a provocation: “I sincerely believe that the book has had its day”\, since Twitter and its 140 characters are enough to say profound things. \nThe rest of the speech dismantles this opening and defends the book and the written press. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nOuverture du 29e Salon international du livre et de la presse de Genève (French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nLivres Hebdo\, 03.05.2015 (dates of the fair)

SUMMARY:Swiss Press Award 2015
DESCRIPTION:The Swiss Press Awards ceremony takes place at the Hotel Bellevue\, in the presence of Alain Berset. He speaks about local journalism and press photography. \nHe worries\, with humour\, about the fashion for “Hyperlokaljournalismus”: the neighbourhood\, the street\, soon journalism “mit Selfie-Stick”. Good journalism\, he says\, looks closely at the world in which people live and knows that it helps to shape it. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nSwiss Press Award 2015 : journalisme local et photographie de presse (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nMarkt & Kommunikation\, 15.04.2015

SUMMARY:Opening of the “1515 Marignano” exhibition at the National Museum
DESCRIPTION:At the opening of the National Museum’s exhibition\, in the midst of the controversy over the memory of the battle\, Alain Berset refuses to treat it simply as the birth certificate of neutrality. Marignano was followed in 1516 by the “Perpetual Peace” with France\, which bound Switzerland to its neighbour for more than 250 years and supplied it with mercenaries. \nHe recalls that the Marignano myth was constructed in the 1890s\, to give the whole country a common narrative and to reintegrate the losers of the Sonderbund. His conclusion: the country needs “nationale Selbstgespräche”. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nWir brauchen nationale Selbstgespräche (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFDHA\, speech of 27.03.2015

Around 10% of patients account for 70 to 80% of care; they are often chronically ill\, and for them poorly coordinated care means lower quality\, unnecessary treatment and superfluous costs. \nHe opens with the Davos Forum\, where the world was described as “kaum mehr steuerbar”: a phrase that sounds familiar to a health minister. In closing\, he returns to the patient testimonies shown during the day: the family doctor and the specialist who do not talk to each other\, the data that do not circulate. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nDeuxième conférence nationale Santé2020 (in German\, French-language page)\nDeuxième conférence nationale Santé2020 : mot de clôture (French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFDHA\, press release of 26.01.2015

SUMMARY:Opening of the 50th Solothurn Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Back from Davos\, Alain Berset opens the fiftieth Solothurn Film Festival. His speech\, in German\, makes the event a mirror of the country: “Wer die Geschichte der Solothurner Filmtage kennt\, versteht die Schweiz.” \nThe films shown over fifty years are\, he says\, seismographs of the Swiss state of mind: the Switzerland of rapid change and the Switzerland of traditions\, real or invented. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nLes Journées de Soleure (in German\, French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFDHA\, speech of 22.01.2015

SUMMARY:National meeting on equal pay in the public sector
DESCRIPTION:Alain Berset opens the national meeting of municipal\, cantonal and federal executives on equal pay in public administration and public procurement. He stresses the public sector’s role as a model: the Confederation\, the cantons and the communes must step up their efforts and send a clear signal to all employers. \nThe figures on the table: in 2012\, women employed in the public sector earn 13.6% less than men\, 18.9% less in the private sector. According to an IDHEAP report\, 64% of cantonal and communal administrations say they check their pay practices or intend to do so; only eleven monitor public procurement. \nIn his address: “The aim is to make Article 8\, paragraph 3 of the Constitution more than a pious wish… a reality.” The President of the Conference of Cantonal Governments\, Jean-Michel Cina\, undertakes to raise awareness among the cantons. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nRencontre nationale sur l’égalité salariale dans le secteur public (French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, press release of 19.01.2015
