SUMMARY:Launch of the Rousseau Tercentenary
DESCRIPTION:On the Île Rousseau\, Alain Berset opens the year marking the tercentenary of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is the first time he appears “as minister of culture”. \nHe declines to give a eulogy: the point is not to bring Rousseau into the Panthéon\, “he is already there”\, but to “bring him out of it”. He stresses the contradictions of the author of the Social Contract\, inspirer of 1789 and enemy of revolutions\, master of introspection and committed man\, who writes in the Confessions that “everything depends on politics”. \nSpeeches on this site \n\nLancement du Tricentenaire de Rousseau (French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, speech of 19.01.2012

SUMMARY:60 years of the Swiss National Science Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Ten days after taking office\, Alain Berset brings the Federal Council’s congratulations to the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) on its 60th anniversary. It is one of his first public appearances as head of the FDHA\, then responsible for education and research. \nHe recalls two figures: Switzerland\, together with Finland\, is world champion in the number of scientific articles per inhabitant\, and second behind the United States for their international recognition. This success\, he says\, is largely due to the SNSF\, which allocates its funds on a single criterion: the quality of the projects and of the researchers. \nSpeeches on this site \n\n60 ans du Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique (FNS) (French-language page)\n\nSources \n\nFederal Council\, speech of 11.01.2012
