Aarau Democracy Days
At the 14th Aarauer Demokratietage, devoted to democracy during the pandemic, Alain Berset gives the lecture at the public evening event in the Kultur- und Kongresshaus, then answers questions from Aarau school classes. He is welcomed by Alex Hürzeler, Landammann of Aargau; the exchange with the pupils is moderated by Hanspeter Hilfiker, Mayor of Aarau.
His message: the war in Europe marks a “Zeitenwende”; Swiss democracy has withstood the test of the pandemic, without a curfew and with public debate remaining lively; emergency law, provided for by the Constitution and the Epidemics Act, must remain limited in time. He calls for tackling inequality, the climate crisis and the withdrawal of part of the population from political life.
