Launch of Project Rosling
Switzerland and the World Health Organization launch Project Rosling in Geneva, with the Gapminder Foundation, in tribute to the Swedish statistician Hans Rosling. Aim: to bring data producers and users closer together for fact-based decisions. Alain Berset sees a role in it for International Geneva, home to 39 international organisations and more than 400 NGOs: to become a recognised data hub.
His speech begins with a quip: in Rosling’s knowledge test, chimpanzees do better than humans. Then the substance: our picture of the world and the data are worlds apart, and political decisions rest on fragile foundations. “We can do better.” He links the project to the “Road to Bern”, launched by Switzerland after the 2021 UN World Data Forum, and to the 2030 Agenda.
