Federal Council extra muros meeting in Winterthur
For its 18th meeting outside Berne, the second in the canton of Zurich, the Federal Council meets in Winterthur, the town chosen by the President of the Swiss Confederation. It arrives by train and holds its meeting at the Kunstmuseum.
Alain Berset gives the press briefing there, in the middle of Oscar Tuazon’s exhibition: culture is “kein Luxus, kein Nice-to-have”, it helps us know “wer wir sind und was uns verbindet”. The Federal Council then meets the Zurich cantonal government and the Winterthur municipal council.
In front of the Stadthaus, several hundred residents await the federal councillors. Alain Berset speaks of Saint Alban, the town’s patron saint, who carries his head on his forearms and keeps silent: “Sankt Albanus wäre der perfekte Bundesrats-Sprecher.” Then he recalls Winterthur’s role in the democratic movement that gave Switzerland its direct democracy.
