First Dialogue Prize of the Jews of Switzerland
The Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG/FSCI) and the Platform of Liberal Jews of Switzerland award their Dialogue Prize for the first time. The winners: Imam Muris Begovic and Rabbi Noam Hertig, from Zurich, and the Protestant deacon Maurice Gardiol and the cantor Eric Ackermann, from French-speaking Switzerland. Alain Berset speaks at the ceremony.
He recalls the emancipation of the Swiss Jews in 1866, “ein Sieg über die eigenen Vorurteile”. He rejects mere tolerance, with its “unangenehm paternalistischen Unterton”, in favour of respect: “Die Stärke der Schweiz wächst mit der Stärke ihrer Minderheiten.” He is concerned about rising antisemitism in Europe and cites the LIKRAT project, which brings young Jews and pupils together in classrooms.
