UN High-Level Week in New York and lecture in Philadelphia
Alain Berset represents Switzerland at the opening of the 73rd General Assembly, with Ignazio Cassis. On 25 September, he speaks in the general debate: the crisis of multilateralism, the Middle East, Syria, Yemen, the protection of health workers in conflict, support for António Guterres’s reforms. “We can only successfully meet the challenges posed by rising inequality, demographic change or migration – and their causes – if we approach them in a spirit of trust.”
On the 26th, he speaks alongside Ruth Dreifuss at an event on drug policy and sustainable development, organised with the Global Commission on Drug Policy, Senegal and Thailand. At the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, he presents with Enrique Peña Nieto and Michael Bloomberg the Global Compact for Migration, negotiated under the leadership of Swiss and Mexican diplomats; in the afternoon, he speaks at the “Road to Marrakech” event. On the 27th, he opens the event co-organised with Afghanistan on universal health coverage in emergencies, with Peter Maurer and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, then speaks at the high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases.
Bilateral meetings with António Guterres, Michelle Bachelet, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Hilda Heine, Khadga Prasad Oli, Hassan Rouhani, Borut Pahor, Ana Brnabić, Hashim Thaçi, Filipe Nyusi and Mauricio Macri. The stay ends at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia, with a lecture on direct democracy and the threats facing democracy. He opens with Einstein: “If the world were to end I’d prefer to be in Switzerland – Everything happens five years later there.”
