Opening of COP24 in Katowice
Alain Berset opens COP24 with some 45 heads of state or government. At stake at the conference: the implementation rules of the Paris Agreement. The summit presents the Silesia Declaration on a just transition.
In his national statement, he recalls that the average temperature in Switzerland has risen by two degrees since 1864 and that the glaciers have lost a fifth of their volume in ten years. He defends transparent and verifiable rules, rejects “any attempt to weaken the implementation of the Paris Agreement” and announces more than 120 million dollars in new Swiss climate contributions. “Those who move first today will be the winners of tomorrow.”
Doris Leuthard takes over for the ministerial segment on 12 December.
