Coronavirus: shops closed and working from home compulsory

13 January 2021

Second wave, new variants. The Federal Council tightens the measures without resorting to emergency law. From 18 January, shops not selling essential goods close; working from home becomes compulsory wherever possible without disproportionate cost; private and public gatherings are limited to five people, children included. The closure of restaurants and of cultural, sports and leisure venues is extended by five weeks, to the end of February.

Before the press, with the President of the Confederation, Guy Parmelin, Alain Berset defends speed: “The faster we act, the better the chances of protecting the health system and avoiding an explosion in cases.” Schools and ski resorts remain the responsibility of the cantons: “We trust the cantons.”
