Opening of the 74th World Health Assembly and BioHub agreement with the WHO

24 May 2021

The Assembly is held online for the second year. Alain Berset opens it from WHO headquarters, as representative of the host country. He thanks the organisation and calls on member states to invest in a universal and lasting architecture of health protection: no country can overcome a pandemic alone. Switzerland supports COVAX and the ACT Accelerator for fair access to vaccines, tests and medicines.

Before the session, he meets the Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and signs with him an agreement under the BioHub initiative. Switzerland makes the Spiez Laboratory available to store strains of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens with epidemic potential, and so contributes to an international system for the voluntary exchange of these materials. A press briefing follows at the Swiss Mission.
