National Day in the three language regions

For his first 1 August as a Federal Councillor, Alain Berset speaks in the three main language regions: on the evening of 31 July in Middes, in his own canton, at midday on 1 August in Altdorf, and in the evening in Locarno. The same speech, in three languages: “Un pays à la fois solide et solidaire”, “Stark und solidarisch mit den weniger Starken”, “Forti e solidali con i meno forti”.
He opens with “a patriotism without pathos” and with the first 1 August speech, given by Emil Welti in 1891. Since the end of the Cold War, Switzerland can no longer define itself by what it is not. It must face up to Europe in crisis: “Das Schicksal Europas ist auch unser Schicksal.”
