Opening of Visions du Réel

Alain Berset opens the documentary film festival with “the story of a little s”: the one in “Visions”, which cannot be heard and which carries the festival’s identity, diversity and subjectivity.
He quotes Robert Flaherty, a pioneer of the genre: “Sometimes you have to lie to tell the truth.” Hence his formula: “there is no true objectivity except in declared subjectivity”. At a time when production costs are falling and screens are multiplying, the festival recalls the importance of discovery and exchange.
