10 years of Swissmedic

Alain Berset congratulates Swissmedic on its tenth anniversary. He recalls that the control of medicines is much older: in 1900, Switzerland was one of the first countries to regulate it.
He answers those who would like Swissmedic simply to adopt foreign decisions: those voices fall silent as soon as a scandal breaks. Mediator had disappeared from the Swiss market as early as 1998, on evidence of serious side effects. The Swiss authority must also be able to authorise innovative medicines on its own, sometimes as the first in the world.
