1400th anniversary of Saint Gall
20 April 2012
Alain Berset speaks at the celebration of the 1400th anniversary of Gall’s arrival in St. Gallen. He rereads the legend: the fever that held back the Irish monk was probably an inner struggle, his refusal to follow his abbot Columbanus.
He draws from it a lesson on freedom, quoting the preamble to the Constitution. “Freiheit ist das grösste Gut der Menschen. Und es ist das unbequemste.” Freedom must be won, including against one’s own convictions of yesterday.
