Inauguration of the Nouvelle Comédie in Geneva

The new building of the Comédie, in Eaux-Vives, is inaugurated after months of closed theatres. Cost: 94 million francs, 45 million of it borne by the canton. Speakers include Councillor of State Thierry Apothéloz, Administrative Councillor Sami Kanaan and the directors, Natacha Koutchoumov and Denis Maillefer.

Alain Berset opens with the last line of Caligula: “I am still alive!” “That could be the cry of the theatre”, battered by the pandemic. Camus’s play premiered at the Comédie on 27 June 1945, directed by Giorgio Strehler, three months before Paris. The next day, the house opens to the public.
