Montreal and Ottawa: Cinemania, Justin Trudeau, co-production agreement
Switzerland is guest of honour at the 29th Cinemania, Montreal’s French-language film festival. Alain Berset opens it on 1 November at the Cinéma Impérial, before Cédric Kahn’s “Le Procès Goldman”. He greets the Canadian-Swiss director Léa Pool, a “witness” to the agreement he has come to sign: it will be initialled “with a clear and frank ‘Yes’. And not with a ‘Yes. But’”.
On 2 November in Ottawa, he is received by Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall, then by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Parliament Hill: bilateral relations, La Francophonie, international affairs, the UN Security Council. The Minister of Canadian Heritage, Pascale St-Onge, then hosts a lunch for him.
On 3 November, at the Cinémathèque québécoise, he holds talks with Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Pascale St-Onge, then signs the new audiovisual co-production agreement with them. It replaces the 1987 agreement, facilitates financing and distribution and opens up to series. In ten years, the two countries had co-produced six films, with a total budget of 19.3 million francs.
