NATUR congress: sustainability, a question of political culture
1 March 2013
At the NATUR congress, Alain Berset is amused by a figure: 15 million results for “Nachhaltigkeit”, 113 million for “sustainability”. Both gratifying and worrying: the word risks no longer meaning anything.
He goes back to 1962, the year when a Switzerland of 10 million inhabitants was first spoken of, when motorways with “at least” four lanes and an artificial island in Zurich’s lake basin were being planned. The same period saw the birth of awareness of heritage and the environment. His conclusion: sustainability is “eine Frage der politischen Kultur”.
