New Year reception for the diplomatic corps
At the Parliament Building, Alain Berset receives the heads of mission accredited to Switzerland for the first time in his presidential year. The Apostolic Nuncio, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, presents the New Year greetings. The Vice-President of the Federal Council and the presidents of both chambers attend.
He opens with a sentence he had spoken himself in the same place five years earlier: “We seem well prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.” Then: “Five years later, things have changed profoundly.” The pandemic, then the war in Ukraine, with its effects on energy, food and the cost of living, and the hunger that threatens Africa and the Middle East.
He sets out the lines for the year: Switzerland’s seat on the UN Security Council, focused on the protection of civilians; the climate conference in Dubai; the exploratory talks with the European Union, which are “progressing positively”.
