Public debate of the candidates with the Conference of INGOs
On 27 May 2024, the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe, together with the CURE network, holds an online public debate with the three candidates. According to the Council of Europe, it is the only time they debate publicly together. Civil society puts its questions live; each candidate has also answered a written questionnaire.
In his written answers, Alain Berset wants the organisation to move from diagnosis to action, on the model of the support to Ukraine, “where we move very quickly from conceptualisation to action”. He proposes “an Action Plan for the regeneration of democracy in Europe” in the wake of the Reykjavík principles. He wants the Conference of INGOs to become a “sounding board” for the Secretary General and the Secretariat. He describes the Secretary General as a bridge between “PACE, which recommends, and the CM, which decides”.
