Special session of the UN General Assembly on drugs (UNGASS)

19 April 2016

Alain Berset leads the Swiss delegation to the special session of the United Nations General Assembly on the world drug problem. He gives a press briefing at the Swiss Mission before the opening.

Switzerland defends its four-pillar policy (prevention, therapy, harm reduction, law enforcement), which treats addiction as an illness. It calls for international policy to incorporate human rights and for the death penalty for drug-related offences to be abolished.

On the sidelines, he holds talks with Martin van Rijn, Dutch State Secretary for Health, with the Danish Health Minister, Sophie Løhde, and with the Iranian Minister of the Interior, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, who heads his country’s fight against drugs.
