Swiss Design Awards 2018
During Art Basel, at Messe Basel, Alain Berset attends the presentation of the Swiss Design Awards and of the Swiss Grand Award for Design, which goes to the fashion designer Cécile Feilchenfeldt, the secateurs manufacturer Felco and the graphic designer Rosmarie Tissi. Seventeen Swiss Design Awards are also presented.
His speech opens with conspiracy theories: Finland and Australia supposedly do not exist, “das steht so klipp und klar im Internet”. Against the “cult of the simple”, he quotes Einstein: make everything as simple as possible, “aber nicht einfacher”. That is what good design achieves. “Design is not decoration”: it makes our surroundings legible. He recalls that as early as 1917 the Federal Assembly made applied arts a task of the Confederation.
