National Day in Lucerne

On the eve of 1 August, Alain Berset gives the National Day speech on the Europaplatz, in front of the KKL. He calls for constructive debate, as opposed to the permanent outrage of social media: “Dass wir uns raufen – und dann wieder zusammenraufen, hält die Schweiz zusammen.” The country’s strength, he says, lies as much in the diversity of its ideas as in that of its languages. He mentions the war, shortages, inflation, the climate and old-age provision.
