Inaugural visit to Berlin: Olaf Scholz and Frank-Walter Steinmeier
First visit to Berlin of the presidential year. Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomes Alain Berset with military honours at the Chancellery. One-to-one talks, then talks between the delegations, then a joint press conference. In the afternoon, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier receives him at Bellevue Palace for talks and lunch.
Three topics: the war in Ukraine, European policy, the UN. Before the press, he condemns the Russian aggression “in aller Schärfe” and puts a figure on Swiss aid: “In den nächsten Jahren mit mindestens 1,8 Milliarden Franken.” On the EU, he refers to the momentum of the exploratory talks and the agreement on the sectoral approach. He presents Switzerland’s priorities on the Security Council and learns about the “climate club” launched by Germany.
