Opening of the 19th Congress of the World Meteorological Organization
At the Geneva International Conference Centre, Alain Berset opens the 19th World Meteorological Congress, the WMO’s supreme body. The organisation is celebrating 150 years since its predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization. Before the session, he meets the Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas.
The congress centres on the UN initiative “Early Warnings for All”: protecting every person on the planet with an early warning system by 2027. “We need a strong World Meteorological Organization. We need meteorological services at the national level which also must be strong. They are the spine of WMO.” He welcomes the organisation’s reforms and presents the Swiss pilot project “Weather4UN”, run by MeteoSwiss, which provides forecasts to humanitarian organisations.
The same day, he flies to New York, where Switzerland holds the presidency of the Security Council.
