Federal Yodelling Festival
On Sunday morning, at the Bossard Arena, Alain Berset speaks at the official ceremony of the 31st Federal Yodelling Festival, before a choir of 300 yodellers. The festival, the first in six years because of the pandemic, draws some 210,000 visitors and more than 10,000 participants over three days. It is a Sunday of federal votes.
The health minister is amused by the programme: “Zugerkirschtorte”, “Zwöi Kaffee Träsch”, three times “Der Bierbrauer”. Yodelling was born as communication from alp to alp; in Berne, he says, communication from desk to desk is sometimes harder. He regrets that the National Council has refused Swiss German in its debates.
The Federal Yodelling Association was founded in 1910 in Berne, not on an alp: the opposition between town and country does not hold. He mentions yodelling’s candidacy for UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
