Message for Holocaust Remembrance Day
27 January 2018
A written message for the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Alain Berset starts from Jean Améry, an Auschwitz survivor tortured by the Gestapo: “Anyone who has been subjected to torture can no longer feel at home in the world.”
Switzerland then chairs the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, 31 member states, which has just adopted a strategy for the first time. The message recalls the projects carried out with the universities of teacher education on teaching the history of the Holocaust and on the Nazi murder of people with disabilities. The struggle, he concludes, begins with the younger generations.
