Visit of Pope Francis to Geneva
Pope Francis comes to Geneva for the 70th anniversary of the World Council of Churches. At the airport, Alain Berset welcomes him at the foot of the aircraft, with Ignazio Cassis, the President of the National Council, Dominique de Buman, and the Geneva authorities; anthems and military honours. A one-to-one meeting in Spanish follows, then a wider meeting with the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin.
They discuss peace, human rights, sustainable development and humanitarian aid. The Middle East, eastern Ukraine, Myanmar and Bangladesh, and the Iran nuclear agreement after the US withdrawal are on the agenda. Before the press, Alain Berset relays the Pope’s concern for refugees and argues for a reform of the Dublin system. In the evening, with Doris Leuthard, he bids the Pope farewell.
