Eve of the National Day: Oberer Euschels alp and Belfaux
On the eve of 1 August, Alain Berset speaks twice in the canton of Fribourg. In the morning, on the Oberer Euschels alp, in the municipality of Jaun, in French and German. In the evening, in Belfaux, his home municipality.
The thread is the same as at the Rütli the next day: the 1848 Constitution, born of a civil war, in which “the victory of one must not mean the defeat of the other”. In Belfaux, he ties it to the place: General Dufour had his headquarters there, and it was there that he received the surrender of Fribourg in 1847. The victors granted the cantons what the vanquished had asked for. Hence his defence of compromise, “a sign of strength”, applied to the issues of the moment: old-age insurance (AHV/AVS) and rising health insurance premiums, which weigh on low- and middle-income families.
