65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65)

15 March 2021 - 26 March 2021

The session opens on 15 March, largely virtual. Alain Berset leads the Swiss delegation and speaks in the general debate with a pre-recorded statement. Themes of the year: women’s full and effective participation in public decision-making and the elimination of violence.

He starts from the pandemic, which hits women harder: they hold the jobs where working from home is impossible, particularly in care, and have taken on more of the home schooling. According to the UN, about 47 million women risk falling into extreme poverty. “The progress made in recent decades on gender equality and women’s rights is threatened by the current crisis.”

Switzerland organises two side events, on equal pay with the EPIC coalition and on statistics on violence with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The session closes on 26 March with joint agreed conclusions, reached after difficult negotiations on sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence.
