74th Locarno Film Festival
On 4 August, on the Piazza Grande, Alain Berset opens the first festival since the 2020 cancellation. He quotes D. W. Griffith, who predicted in 1924 that cinema would eliminate all conflict: the prophecy is running late, but summer 2021 will at least have driven the pandemic from people’s minds. The edition celebrates films shot in Ticino.
On 5 August, before the media, he presents the industry’s challenges: about 360 million francs paid by the Confederation and the cantons under the COVID measures for culture, specific aid for film, the “Back to the Cinema” campaign. After the institutional framework agreement was abandoned, participation in the MEDIA programme remains a goal; until then, compensatory measures and co-production agreements. He defends the investment obligation for online platforms and presents a study on unequal opportunities between women and men in film.
On 6 August, he speaks at the lunch hosted by the festival at Monte Verità in Ascona, then at the Federal Office of Culture aperitif.
