Opening of the 17th World Meteorological Congress

At the Geneva International Conference Centre, Alain Berset opens, on behalf of the host state, the 17th Congress of the WMO (25 May – 12 June). “To ensure sustainable development, the global community needs reliable information on the state of the climate and the changes under way.”

He pays tribute to the outgoing Secretary-General, Michel Jarraud. And he announces the candidacy of Professor Thomas Stocker, Co-Chair of Working Group I, for the chairmanship of the IPCC.
