Alain Berset opens the new permanent exhibition of the Musée gruérien, a few kilometres from where he grew up. He says so: he has not come “with a heavy heart”.

His point: roots are not a withdrawal; they allow “one’s gaze to rise higher”. Switzerland is only beginning to grasp the extent of its living traditions, from the Lyoba to the Bénichon; they must be celebrated “not out of narrow nationalism, but out of pride”.
