Presentation of the ESPRIX award

7 March 2013

At the ESPRIX forum, which honours business excellence, Alain Berset opens with failed prophecies: Bill Gates judging the Internet “uninteressant”, IBM’s Thomas Watson forecasting a world market for five computers.

Switzerland, he says, has a “geniale Grösse”: small enough for everyone to know someone working on an interesting project, large enough to be a hub of innovation. Its strength lies in the balance between competitiveness, innovation and social security, because “eine ängstliche Schweiz hat keine Ideen”. He concludes with Schumpeter: “Autos fahren schnell, weil sie eine Bremse haben.”
