Guest of the Landsgemeinde of Appenzell Innerrhoden

Alain Berset represents the Federal Council at the Landsgemeinde, in the year marking 500 years since Appenzell joined the Confederation. The minutes record cool, overcast weather. He makes light of it: “Das Wetter heute ist schlecht, obwohl MeteoSchweiz auch zu meinem Departement gehört.”

As the newest member of the Federal Council, he asked what to expect. He was advised to concentrate above all on the procession step, which many guests had found difficult. He expresses his admiration for a democracy in which government and people face each other, and in which the people also take an oath: the common good is everyone’s business.
