Swiss Economic Forum
6 June 2013
Alain Berset starts from a silence: last year, at this same podium, no one had been able to say where Europe was heading. Never since 1914 has the situation there been so open. But politics and the economy, he says, are no longer adversaries: they pursue the same goals.
He argues for a comprehensive reform of old-age provision, first and second pillars together: a package is not a high-risk strategy, because it integrates particular interests into the general interest. And he quotes Mencken: for every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong. “Die Schweiz ist das Land, das auf komplexe Fragen komplexe Antworten gibt.”
