First Swiss Dance Awards
20 September 2013
At the Equilibre theatre in Fribourg, the Federal Office of Culture presents the Swiss Dance Awards for the first time. The Swiss Dance Award goes to Martin Schläpfer, director of the Ballett am Rhein, the special award to the Théâtre Sévelin 36 in Lausanne. Yen Han and Foofwa d’Imobilité are honoured as outstanding dancers.
“It was about time!” Alain Berset quotes Calvin’s ecclesiastical ordinances of 1541: dancing outside weddings cost 60 sous and three days in prison on bread and water. The reformers feared dance because it expresses a primal freedom. He concludes with Merce Cunningham: after the dance, nothing remains but “that single fleeting moment when you feel alive”.
