100 years of Suva

At the Bürgenstock, Alain Berset celebrates the centenary of Suva, the country’s first social insurance. “Die SUVA – das ist die Schweiz im Kleinen.” He recounts the quarrels of its early days, down to the names of its branch offices, and draws from them a thesis on labour peace: solutions that excite no one but that everyone can live with, “unser helvetisches Genie der mittleren Unzufriedenheit”.

He refuses to set social security against competitiveness, and warns against “Uberisation”: “We cannot tolerate the emergence of a category of second-class workers.”
