Council of Europe conference on equal access of women to justice

Alain Berset opens the conference of the Council of Europe’s Gender Equality Commission, organised with the Federal Office for Gender Equality. “Equal access to justice is essential to achieving equality between women and men in all areas.”

He starts from a question, “What is progress?”, and quotes Victor Hugo: “Progress is the collective step of the human race.” Between 1998 and 2006, fewer than 20% of applications to the European Court of Human Rights were lodged by women. Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Director General of Democracy of the Council of Europe, also opens the conference.
