Curaviva congress: old age at the centre of change

15 February 2013

Curaviva, the association of care homes and social institutions, celebrates its tenth anniversary and closes two days of congress. Alain Berset starts from Michel Serres: since his birth, life expectancy has risen from 50 to 80, and “when people swear fidelity for sixty-five years, marriage no longer has the same meaning”.

Old age, he says, is at the heart of a social change. From it he draws the line of Old-Age Provision 2020: a reference age of 65 for women as for men, flexible retirement, adjustment of the second pillar. Today’s sixty-year-olds are often younger than the fifty-year-olds of the past.
