Inauguration of CERN Science Gateway
CERN inaugurates its Science Gateway, a centre for science education and outreach designed by Renzo Piano. The building cost about 100 million francs, entirely funded by donations; the Stellantis Foundation gave 45 million. It opens to the public the following day, free of charge. Ministers and senior representatives of the member and associate member states attend the day.
Alain Berset speaks for Switzerland, the host state. He quotes Jean d’Ormesson on art and science, pays tribute to the architect and calls CERN “a School of Higher Particles”. On the 27-kilometre ring, partly under French soil: “this invisible circle makes CERN an intersection between Switzerland, France and Europe”. And: “an exceptional institution, which allows Switzerland and Geneva to shine in the world”.
