Launch of the Rousseau Tercentenary
19 January 2012
On the Île Rousseau, Alain Berset opens the year marking the tercentenary of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is the first time he appears “as minister of culture”.
He declines to give a eulogy: the point is not to bring Rousseau into the Panthéon, “he is already there”, but to “bring him out of it”. He stresses the contradictions of the author of the Social Contract, inspirer of 1789 and enemy of revolutions, master of introspection and committed man, who writes in the Confessions that “everything depends on politics”.
