Official visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
Hassan Rouhani returns the visit made to Tehran in 2016 by Johann Schneider-Ammann. The two presidents first meet one-to-one on the evening of 2 July, joined later by Ignazio Cassis and Mohammad Javad Zarif. On the morning of the 3rd, they jointly open a Swiss-Iranian innovation and industry forum on health and food, organised by the chambers of commerce.
The official talks follow, with Simonetta Sommaruga and Johann Schneider-Ammann on the Swiss side. The central issue: the agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme (JCPOA) after the US withdrawal in May. Alain Berset calls on all parties to show restraint and defends the possibility of delivering humanitarian goods despite the return of sanctions. Switzerland also raises the death penalty, the protection of minorities and Israel’s right to exist.
An agreement on road transport of goods and passengers and two declarations of intent, on health and on science, are signed in the presence of the two presidents. Before the press, Alain Berset calls the JCPOA an “unprecedented success of international diplomacy”.
