Official visit by Maia Sandu, President of Moldova
At the head of a Federal Council delegation, Alain Berset receives the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, in Berne, on an official visit on 18 and 19 October. He had invited her. The day before, in Chișinău, Ignazio Cassis announced a new package of Swiss aid to the Moldova Support Platform.
The talks cover the consequences for Moldova of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and bilateral cooperation: drinking water in rural areas, maternity units, vocational training, the fight against corruption. Maia Sandu calls Switzerland a “prieten de încredere”, a trusted friend. The EFTA–Moldova free trade agreement, signed the previous summer, awaits ratification by the Swiss Parliament.
The following day, the President visits a pharmaceutical company in Basel, debates with ETH Zurich students and meets the Moldovan diaspora.
