Press conference: no to the initiative on abortion financing

On behalf of the Federal Council, Alain Berset recommends rejecting the initiative “Abortion financing is a private matter”, put to the vote on 9 February 2014. Women facing this decision must not be subjected to the pressure of economic considerations, and the savings targeted are minimal.
He recalls that the decriminalisation of abortion and its reimbursement by basic health insurance were approved by 72.2% in 2002, and that the abortion rate has remained low: 6.9 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in 2012, one of the lowest in Europe.
