Speech at the Europa Forum Lucerne
The Europa Forum Luzern holds its public evening at the KKL under the title “Schweiz-EU am Scheideweg?”. Alain Berset gives the opening speech; a debate follows, moderated by Sebastian Ramspeck (SRF), with Michael Matthiessen, EU Ambassador to Switzerland, MEP Andreas Schwab, National Councillor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter, Markus Somm and Thomas Kirchner.
The President starts from the historian Herbert Lüthy: Switzerland has always lived between economic necessity and political distrust of Europe, and is none the worse for it. “Wir sind EU-skeptisch, weil wir so europäisch sind. Aber wir sind ganz bestimmt keine Anti-Europäer.” He defends the bilateral approach, rejects the charge of “Rosinenpickerei” and recalls the accompanying measures. His conclusion: the EU and Switzerland will find a good solution “früher oder später”.
