State visit by Emmanuel Macron
The full Federal Council welcomes Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron on the Bundesplatz, with military honours. Alain Berset gives the welcome speech in the Hall of the Federal Palace. He starts from Jean-Luc Godard, “Solitude is not isolation”, traces Switzerland’s political debt to France, from 1798 to 1848, and concludes: “Our world is bleeding.”
The talks cover bilateral relations, the bilateral path with the European Union, the Security Council and International Geneva. Two texts are signed: a joint declaration on research into the cryosphere and the Alps, and a declaration of intent on student mobility. At the press conference: “Switzerland is profoundly European, by its geographical position, but also by its values and its culture.”
On 16 November, the two presidents visit the Jean Monnet Foundation in Lausanne and debate Europe with students of the University of Lausanne. Emmanuel Macron ends his visit at CERN.
