Unconditional basic income: position of the Confederation and the cantons

8 April 2016

Together with Anne-Claude Demierre, Vice-President of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Social Affairs, Alain Berset presents to the press the position of the Confederation and the cantons on the popular initiative “For an unconditional basic income”. The initiators proposed 2,500 francs per month per adult.

The Federal Council shares the aim of a dignified existence for all, already enshrined in the Constitution. It considers that such an income would weaken the economy and the social security system. On 5 June 2016, the people and all the cantons reject the initiative.
