Visit by the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay
Alain Berset receives Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, in Berne for a working visit. The ties go back to the 1950s, to the friendship between the king of the time and a Swiss industrialist. From 1978, the Confederation has been active in Bhutan; in the 1980s and 1990s, Switzerland was among its main donors. The SDC withdrew at the end of 2016.
The relationship is therefore changing in nature: from development cooperation to a political, economic, scientific and cultural partnership. An agreement on regular political consultations has just been signed; a Swiss honorary consulate is to open in Bhutan. Alain Berset welcomes the kingdom’s democratisation since its 2008 constitution. The two men also discuss climate change and their cooperation in international forums.
