Visit by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić
Alain Berset receives Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, in Berne; she has also come for the 60th anniversary of Switzerland’s accession. They discuss the follow-up to Reykjavik, where in May the 4th Summit adopted principles for democracy and created the register of damage caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Switzerland has been a member of it since 30 August.
He argues for closer links between the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the European Political Community and the UN organisations in Geneva. He supports the accession of Kosovo, which would open the European Court of Human Rights to all its inhabitants, the Serb minority included. He deplores that the Court and its mechanism are “being put under pressure”.
He hands her Switzerland’s instrument of ratification of the Protocol amending Convention 108 on data protection (“108+”). The Secretary General then travels to Neuchâtel, for a public lecture at the university.
